How Do I Prepare My Child for In-Person Classes?

The return to the classroom is a long-awaited moment representing hope and a step closer to a less restricted normality. It is also a responsibility, because it means taking every care so as not to expose the rest of the school community. In these uncertain times, information offers reassurance and clarity so that families can take the decision that best suits them. Our psychology department and experts in various fields share the most important things to bear in mind before taking the step of attending in person:
1. Keep talking; prepare them for what is coming
It is very important to be honest and clear with our children, to talk about how school will be different from before, including the new safety measures put in place. Communication with teachers is essential too, so that both sides know what to expect and understand that the changes exist to keep us healthy and safe. Doing enjoyable activities together helps lift spirits and gives children a sense of achievement.
2. Return to the routine
Bedtimes and waking times have probably shifted over these months of learning from home, so they need adjusting gradually so that children are ready.
3. Reinforce the health measures
Over the past year we have acquired habits that keep us safe: wearing a mask correctly, washing our hands frequently, using hand gel and keeping a healthy distance. We should keep reinforcing these habits and correct children where necessary, as well as recognising the effort when they get it right.
4. Do the usual things
This helps keep us in a context of normality, so it is worth following the typical back-to-school routines — buying the school bag and supplies, or making a special breakfast.
5. Strengthen the immune system
Good health is essential at this stage, and we achieve it chiefly by looking after diet and taking physical exercise. Restorative sleep also matters, as does avoiding crowded places and managing stress and anxiety. On diet, it is advisable to minimise sugar, processed and fast food, to drink enough water and to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Visiting a doctor or nutritionist to assess our habits and state of health, and to check whether a supplement is needed, is a good option.
The pandemic has shown us the human capacity for resilience, and with good information we will reach the goal of returning to a normality as safe as, and as close as possible to, the one we knew before.
Every family’s situation and needs are different, and the decision each one takes will be the right one. The school is always available to resolve any doubt that arises.
