The specialist in applied Hispanic linguistics Diana Guardiola delivered, from Navarra in Spain, the seminar-workshop “Structures and rational processes: what must happen when you write” to the school’s staff.
During the online sessions held on Saturdays 6 and 13 February, participants learned and applied the linguistic and structural demands of the five basic textual sequences with which the whole of written expression is resolved: description, narration, dialogue, exposition and argument.
The workshop analysed literary extracts to identify their elements, and put what had been explained into practice through individual and team activities. In this way participants completed exercises using the structure they had studied.
Guardiola also answered outstanding questions in detail, so that participants fully understood the process that must be followed in writing if ideas are to be conveyed with quality, clarity and purpose.
This ability and experience on the part of a master of lexicography are without doubt the qualities that have seen her recognised in Mexico with the National Prize for Letters, and with the Medal of Merit of the Congress of the State of Tamaulipas.
Each year Guardiola gives Oxford staff a writing course-workshop on a different subject, useful both to teachers and to staff generally: as well as acquiring more tools for the classroom, it produces successful written communication in every setting. This time, distance was no obstacle to that aim.
We congratulate the participants of this important seminar, because their knowledge is received with enthusiasm by our students and contributes to the continuing professional development to which we are committed at Oxford.
